Relations between Venezuela and the United States Essay To create a speech/presentation about Venezuela-United States relations, with a focus on the regime of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Topic: Relations between Venezuela and the United States, with a focus on the Chavez administration. Purpose: To be able to analyze the roots of the current state of Venezuela-United States relations as well as its future, given the existence of the Chavez government. To say that relations between Venezuela and the United States are very shaky is already an understatement. This is because the foreign policy of the US in Latin America is a ââ¬Å"rhetorically concealed fusion between popular elections and imperial appointmentsâ⬠(Landau 29). The US has a long history of overthrowing Latin American governments that show even the slightest hint of favoring the poor. As soon as they get word about a pro-poor Latin American leader, the US government would flex its political, economic and military muscles in order to replace him or her with a pro-US head of state. The end of the Cold War did not change this scenario. Since 1999, seven Latin American leaders were overthrown due to their pro-US stance. Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada resigned from the Bolivian presidency in 2005 due to massive popular revolts over his pro-US economic strategies. Paraguayââ¬â¢s Raul Cubas stepped down in 1999 due to charges of corruption and involvement in the assassination of Vice President Luis Maria Argana. Ecuadorian President Jamil Mahuad was toppled from power in 2000 because of his adherence to free trade (Landau 29). The regime of Peruââ¬â¢s Alberto Fujimori ended prematurely in 2000 mainly due to his bloody suppression of anti-US political dissent. The collapse of the Argentine economy in December 2001 because of neo-liberal policies resulted in popular revolts that forced President Fernando de la Rua to resign (Landau 29). But Venezuelaââ¬â¢s Hugo Chavez is a Latin American leader that can be hardly described as a Washington lapdog. His pro-poor policies earned him immense respect and support from the Venezuelan masses, three consecutive presidential terms and harassment from the White House. The relationship between the US and Latin America has traditionally been that of a master and a slave. Since its first arrival on Latin America in the 19th century, the US clearly wanted nothing more from the continent but unlimited access to its natural resources (Oââ¬â¢Brien 180). But changing political realities in the 20th century prompted the US to attain this objective in a more subtle fashion. For most of the 20th century, therefore, the US projected itself to Latin America as the ââ¬Å"good neighborâ⬠(Gilderhus 71) ââ¬â an indispensable ally in the continentââ¬â¢s struggle against the Great Depression, the Axis Powers and Communism. But it was not until the postwar era that this ââ¬Å"good neighborâ⬠facade of the US became even more pronounced. Intensifying Latin American nationalism in the 1950s threatened US political and economic interests in the continent. The US, needing all the resources and allies it could get in order to challenge the Soviet Union in the global contest known as the Cold War, looked for an excuse to intervene in Latin America. Thus, American policymakers associated nationalism and Communism (Oââ¬â¢Brien 181). This association between nationalism and Communism on the part of American lawmakers is valid to a certain extent. Prevailing economic conditions during and immediately after World War II led to the emergence of leftist politics and labor militancy throughout Latin America. In Mexico, Brazil and Argentina, for instance, postwar economic recovery and programs promoting industrialization resulted in the growth of manufacturing workers from about 50 to 60 percent. Increasing urban workforces, in turn, translated to larger and more militant labor movements that called for better working conditions and greater economic benefits. Furthermore, Communist parties in Cuba, Chile and Brazil obtained considerable gains in terms of membership and voter support (Oââ¬â¢Brien 182). The aforementioned developments did not sit well with Latin Americaââ¬â¢s elite, who were fearful that leftist politics and labor militancy would make them lose their firm hold over the continentââ¬â¢s politics and economy. They therefore took advantage of the reemerging anti-Communist militancy of the US, using it as an excuse to roll back political reforms, outlaw Communist parties and crack down on independent unions (Oââ¬â¢Brien 182). The American government, meanwhile, rewarded them by bestowing on them the political and economic leadership of their respective countries. A bloody, CIA-engineered coup in 1973 toppled the socialist regime of Chileââ¬â¢s Salvador Allende and ushered into power the pro-US Augusto Pinochet (Menjivar and Rodriguez 35). The US-backed Somoza dynasty ruled Nicaragua from 1937 to 1979, robbing the country blind and brutally suppressing all forms of legitimate political opposition (Leonard 1134). Francois and Jean-Claude Duvalier became the dictators of Haiti from 1957 to 1986, living off generous amounts of political and military aid from the US (Leonard 243). The dictatorship of the Dominican Republicââ¬â¢s Rafael Trujillo lasted from 1930 to 1961, primarily due to his exploitation of US fears of Nazism during the 1930s and Communism during the Cold War (Leonard 244). Although socialism in Latin America declined in the 1990s, certain economic developments in Venezuela led to its resurgence in the country. Venezuela had abundant oil resources, but its oil industry was developed at the expense of equally important non-oil industries. As a result, the value of the Bolivar fuerte was dependent on fluctuating oil prices. Dropping oil prices forced the Venezuelan government to take out foreign loans and to debauch the currency. Inflation ensued, plunging the Venezuelan economy into poverty (Reid 161). Since Chavez was first elected President in 1998, Venezuelaââ¬â¢s oil policy had represented ââ¬Å"a dramatic break from the pastâ⬠(Ellner and Salas 54). This was mainly because he used the countryââ¬â¢s oil profits to come up with numerous social programs that were intended to help the most marginalized sectors of Venezuelan society (Ellner and Salas 54). One of Chavezââ¬â¢s first programs was ââ¬Å"Plan Bolivar 2000,â⬠a civilian-military program that included road building, house construction, mass vaccinations, land reform, the lowering of infant mortality rates, the implementation of a free state-subsidized healthcare system and a system of free education up to the tertiary level (Peet and Hartwick 192). By the end of 2001, the aforementioned program led to an increase in primary school enrollment by 1 million students (Peet and Hartwick 193). Chavez preserved his administration by using oil as a means of forging alliances with like-minded leaders. In 1999, he announced that the Venezuelan state-owned petroleum company PDVSA and the Brazilian state-run oil and gas giant Petroleo Brasileiro were reviewing plans of forming a larger joint oil company. The result of these plans would be Petrosur, an enterprise that was situated on the southern cone of Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. Petrosur was intended to supply oil to countries under preferential financial terms, encourage large-scale infrastructure such as pipelines and refineries and coordinate oil distribution, exploration and processing. The profits of Petrosur would be used to subsidize social programs for education, healthcare and employment (Kozloff 105). Chavezââ¬â¢s populist reforms earned him a second term in 2000 and a third in 2006. But his manner of using Venezuelaââ¬â¢s oil reserves did not sit well with Washington and the Venezuelan elite. Prior to Chavezââ¬â¢s regime, Venezuela was the second largest supplier of oil to the United States (Noreng 74). In addition, PDVSA was controlled by the Venezuelan elites (Ellner and Salas 122). Thus, it was no longer surprising if these two parties joined forces in order to expel Chavez from power. On April 9, 2002, the CTV (Venezuelaââ¬â¢s largest trade union organization), Fedecamaras (Venezuelaââ¬â¢s largest business federation) and board members of the PDVSA carried out a general strike against Chavezââ¬â¢s oil policies. Three days later, CIA-backed elements of the Venezuelan armed forces staged a coup against him. The coup succeeded in temporarily ousting Chavez and replacing him with Fedecamaras president Pedro Carmona Estanga. Widespread popular protests, however, forced Estanga to resign from the presidency to make way for Chavez (Trinkunas 206). But the CTV, Fedecamaras and the PDVSA would not allow themselves to be defeated. On December 2, 2002, they called for the resignation of Chavez by staging another general strike. The strike lasted for 63 days ââ¬â the aforementioned parties were forced to finally call it off due to subsequent detrimental effects on the Venezuelan economy. The strike was said to have devastated the Venezuelan economy by costing the latter about 7. 6% of its GDP (Kohnstamm, Bao, Porup and Schechter 28). Venezuelan politics remained turbulent until Chavez consolidated his power by winning a 2004 referendum. Having obtained tremendous political support and immense oil-generated wealth, he then proceeded to strengthen pan-American socialism. He openly established strong political and economic ties with other Leftist leaders in Bolivia, Argentina, Cuba, Uruguay, Chile and Brazil. Despite being ridiculed by Bushââ¬â¢s officials as ââ¬Å"Castroââ¬â¢s little buddyâ⬠(Landau 30), Chavez won about 63% of the vote in Venezuelaââ¬â¢s 2006 national elections (Kohnstamm, Bao, Porup and Schechter 28). At present, it is very obvious that majority of the Venezuelan people continue to support Chavez. In February 2009, 54% of Venezuelans (Oââ¬â¢Neill n. pag. ) supported an amendment that would scrap presidential term limits in their country (Llana n. pag. ). Simply put, he would finally be allowed to run for the presidency in 2012. This development is ironic, considering that they rejected in 2007 a constitutional referendum which included the said issue. Moreover, Chavezââ¬â¢s regime was recently criticized for its failure to address acute urban problems such as transport, crime and waste disposal (Oââ¬â¢Neill n. pag. ). But the very existence of Chavezââ¬â¢s administration showed Latin Americans that it is possible for them to freely elect their own representatives, as well as choose the form of government which they deem appropriate (Oââ¬â¢Neill n. pag. ). His open defiance of Washingtonââ¬â¢s dictates proved that a Third World nation, with sheer political will and unity of the part of its citizenry, can actually assert itself to the powerful nation on earth. Through Chavez, Venezuela showed that democracy is not measured in terms of how long a leader stays in power. Rather, it is whether or not this head was in fact chosen by the people and would truly serve their interests.

Lord of the Flies: A Tale of a Fateful Trip à à à à à à Man has never quite found a truly perfect paragon in himself.à Through some fault of his own he can never achieve the high ideal of perfection that he seeks to attain.à The 'Divine' Michelangelo, named so by his contemporary biographer Giorgio Vasari, never called his masterwork of the Sistine Chapel ceiling finished. When it was unveiled Pope Julius II fell to his knees in prayer at the sight of this 'divine work of perfection.'à Michelangelo, who never claimed himself to be a painter, never accepted his work as a masterpiece, claiming that it was "full of flaws" produced by his own imperfections and sins.à William Golding attributes this universal flaw to the evil produced by man.à Never before had man's evil been shown as it had during WWI.à The viciousness of man was apparent to all the world in the creation of the atomic bomb and in a war that concerned the whole earth.à In response to this unveiling of evil, Golding created The Lord of the Flies.à In this work of fiction, Golding hinted that even the youngest of all individuals- adolescent boys-are capable of inescapable evil.à He also suggested that this evil pervades into even the most saintly and corrupts all that it comes into contact with.à In The Lord of the Flies Golding uses different characters in the novel to show the influence of this evil upon society and to represent the most the four basic aspects of human nature. à Ralph is an attractive boy and a natural leader; the well-adjusted, athletic boy who might easily become the idol of his peers.à First mentioned as "the boy with fair hair," Ralph emerges as a child of fortune endowed with common sense: the sort of child who naturally fosters grace, s... ...nds the pragmatic conflict of good and evil that exists in man, and unlike Simon and Piggy, he is resourceful enough to elude death and to carry this knowledge back to civilization.à On the mainland, Ralph will be a man of reason aware of the darkness that lurks in man-even in the most innocent person.à à Works Cited. If You Could Go Back in Time Essay
I have many reasons to explain my choice. First, I wish to come back my childhood to remember my happy and impartial time. After many competition in school, university and now, society I realize that childhood is the most beautiful time and place. I want to forget all stressfulness, competition and response in life. To do that, we need a place that has no noise, no boss, no business, no salary and so on. And only childhood give us peaceful, it reminds us your games with friends, our parentsââ¬â¢ sacrifice to give us the best things, our funny and impartial dreams about future job such as: sometimes i wanted to be a rock star, famous actress, doctor, teacherâ⬠¦ It is worthwhile to have chance to remember the most beautiful time in whole life. Another reason is that, I want to fix my faults in the past. It is common knowledge that most of us made some bad things in childhood and this chance help us fix them. I have never forgot one story in my childhood. When I was a six-year-old girl, my family was quite poor. Once time I saw a beautiful but expensive doll of my friend. I liked it and hope I would have one but my mother had no money to buy it. She said sorry while I cried loudly and said that:â⬠I hate mom. You can imagine that my suddenly sentence made my mother really sad and she felt she couldnââ¬â¢t give me everything I need. I really regret about this until now. If I could turn back time I would fix my biggest fault in my childhood and say that:â⬠I love momâ⬠. Going back time is an unreal dream but we have rights to imagine and wish. If I can stop the time and fly through time, I would go back my childhood to have peaceful time, to fix some faults those make my love ones sad.

Feme Sole and Womens Rights Historical Perspective
A woman with the status ofà feme soleà was thus able to make legal contracts and sign legal documents in her own name. She could own property and dispose of it in her own name.à She also had the right to make her own decisions about her education and could make decisions about how to dispose of her own wages. What made this status special, and what did it mean? Feme sole literally means a woman alone.à In law, an adult woman who is not married, or one who is acting on her own regarding her estate and property, acting on her own rather than as a feme covert. The plural is femes sole.à The phrase is also spelledà femme sole in French. Illustrative Example In the last half of the 19th century, whenà Elizabeth Cady Stantonà andà Susan B. Anthonyà headed theà National Womans Suffrage Associationà which also published a newspaper,à Anthony had to sign contracts for the organization and paper, and Stanton could not.à Stanton, a married woman, wasà aà feme covert. and Anthony, mature and single, was a feme sole, so under law, Anthony was able to sign contracts, and Stanton was not.à Stantons husband would have had to sign in Stantons stead. Historical Context Under common British law, an adult single woman (never married, widowed or divorced) was independent of a husband, and therefore not covered by him in the law, becoming one person with him. Blackstone does not consider it a violation of the principle ofà feme covertà for a wife to act as an attorney for her husband, as when he was out of town, for that implies no separation from, but is rather a representation of, her lord.... Under certain legal conditions, a married woman could act on her own behalf regarding property and estate.à Blackstoneà mentions, for instance, that if the husband is banished legally, he is dead in law, and thus the wife would have no legal defense if she were sued. In civil law, the husband and wife were considered separate persons. In criminal prosecutions, a husband and wife could be sued and punished separately, but could not be witnesses for one another.à The exception to the witness rule was, according to Blackstone, would be if the husband forced her to marry him. Symbolically, the tradition of feme sole vs. feme covert continues when women choose marriage to keep their names or adopt the husbands name. The concept of femeà soleà evolved in England during feudal medieval times. The position of a wife to a husband was considered somewhat parallel to that of a man to his baron (the power of a man over his wife continued to be calledà coverteà de baron.à As the concept ofà feme sole evolved in the 11th through 14th century, any woman who worked independently at a craft or a trade, rather than working with a husband, was considered aà feme sole.à But this status, if held by a married woman, conflicted with ideas about debt being a family debt, and eventually, the common law evolved so that married women could not conduct business on their own without the permission of their husbands. Changes Over Time Coverture, and thus the need for a category ofà feme sole, began to change in the 19th century, including in the various Married Womens Property Acts passed by states.à Some version of coverture survived in United States Law into the last half of the 20th century, protecting husbands from responsibility for major financial obligations incurred by their wives, and permitting women to use as a defense in court that her husband had ordered her to take an action. Religious Roots In medieval Europe, canon law also was important.à Under canon law, by the 14th century, a married woman could not make a will (testament) deciding how any real estate she had inherited could be distributed since she could not own real estate in her own name. She could, however, decide on how her personal goods would be distributed. If she was a widow, she was bound by certain rules ofà dower.à Such civil and religious laws were influenced by a key letter from Paul to the Corinthians in the Christian Scriptures,à 1 Corinthians 7:3-6, here rendered in the King James Version: 3à Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband. 4à The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife. 5à Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency. 6à But I speak this by permission, and not of commandment. Current Law Today, a woman is considered to retain her feme sole status even after marriage.à An example of the current law is Section 451.290, from the Revised Statutes of the state of Missouri, as the statute existed in 1997: A married woman shall be deemed a femme sole so far as to enable her to carry on and transact business on her own account, to contract and be contracted with, to sue and be sued, and to enforce and have enforced against her property such judgments as may be rendered for or against her, and may sue and be sued at law or in equity, with or without her husband being joined as a party.

What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July a Rhetorical Analysis
In his speech, What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?, Frederick Douglass passionately argues that to the slave, and even to the freed African American, the Fourth of July is no more than a mockery of the grossest kind. Douglas uses many rhetorical strategies to convey his powerful emotions on the subject, and the end result is a very effectively argued point. Douglass begins by asking a series of rhetorical questions, not without the use of sarcasm. He refers to that Declaration of Independence, instead of the Declaration of Independence, to stress the separation between his people and those who are not oppressed. In the next paragraph, he continues to ask rhetorical questions. The purpose of all these questions is to giveâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦He almost rubs it in their faces: that their proclaimed aspirations have not been tended to with the proper amount of effort and attention, and that all that has been put forth up to that point has failed miserably. The abov e quotation is comparable to saying start trying or go home. The fact that he speaks so harshly to this particular audience only shows how passionately he feels for his own people. Back to the first page, Douglass makes a reference to the Bible. He applies his own situation to that of the one described by the quote. He is the one who can not forget about his people. He can not express joy, when his people express their pains. His argument is proved multiple times with the simple logic presented in his speech. It can be summed up with this: (1) This holiday is to rejoice for the sake of freedom and liberty. (2) My people have no freedom, have no liberty. (3) You rejoice. (4) My people mourn. (5) This holiday is a mockery to us. The reference to the mockery of it all is made over and over again, and with such a simply logical statement, one can not possibly argue its validity. Douglass moves on to speak of the wrongs committed by America, and how they have piled sky-hi gh to the point of no return. He states that any just man who is not prejudice shall see that his words are of truth. He speaks of the Constitution, he speaks of the Bible, and he speaks of God. The day was January 30, 1933, Adolf Hitler was named chancellor of Germany (World War II in Europe). As Berlin celebrated proudly the night of, the rest of the world had little idea of the tragic consequences that lie ahead. Within months, Hitler and the new Nazi regime obtained power all over the country (The Holocaust Explained). Unlike the people of The Road and other societies where this occurred, it was not the German people themselves that suffered. Unless, of course, that German happened to be Jewish. Hitlerââ¬â¢s desire for power was one that was not a simple want, but a raging desire fueled by his anger and ideas. This desire was strong enough that he even wrote a book about it prior to achieving his position as chancellor. Mein Kampf or My Struggle, which contained ââ¬Å"revelations concerning the nature of his character and his blueprint for Germany s future served as a warning to the world. A warning that was mostly ignored.â⬠(Rise of Hitler). Hitler labeled the blonde haired, blue eyed people of Germany as Aryans. This Aryan race is what he considered to be superior among the rest of the world. He considered the Jewish people to be scum and the cause of all of Germanyââ¬â¢s problems. This belief was not just some type of prejudice carried by a man. This hatred spread across the country like a virus and eventually led to the extermination of 11 million people (Rosenberg). Multiple Intelligences by Howard Gardner Free Essays
ââ¬ËMultiple intelligencesââ¬â¢ is a theory first created by Howard Gardner.à They describe eight different ways that people can be smart without falling into the traditional description of what people think of as smart.à It is good to know what oneââ¬â¢s own intelligences are, and to know the intelligences of oneââ¬â¢s students in a teaching situation, because everyone learns differently. We will write a custom essay sample on Multiple Intelligences by Howard Gardner or any similar topic only for you Order Now The multiple intelligences were first described in the early 1990s by Howard Gardner, a psychologist who was interested in the ways that people learned.à He noted that most traditional intelligence tests looked at visual/spatial ability, mathematical/logical ability, and verbal ability.à However, Gardner was convinced that people did not have to have these abilities to be smart. He saw that people were ââ¬Ëtalentedââ¬â¢ in music, sports, or even in their ability to be reflective or relate to others.à Whereas most people considered these abilities ââ¬Ëextraââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëtalents,ââ¬â¢ they did not consider them as intelligences.à Gardner disagreed. Gardner felt that people were considered smart in seven different ways (the eighth intelligence was added later).à The original intelligences were visual/spatial, logical/mathematical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, musical, bodily/kinesthetic, and linguistic.à The eighth intelligence is naturalistic. Visual/spatial intelligence deals with the ability to understand pictures and objects in two and three dimensional space.à Someone with this strength is good at art, reading maps, and related visual abilities. Logical/mathematical is about the ability to reason and work with numbers.à People with this intelligence are good at math, logic puzzles, and other forms of reasoning. Interpersonal deals with the ability to relate to others.à People with this intelligence are good at making friends, winning people over (like in politics or leadership situations), and understanding others. Intrapersonal deals with oneââ¬â¢s ability to understand oneself.à People with this ability are usually reflective and introspective, and may keep journals.à They continually try to understand themselves better and to improve themselves based on their reflection. Musical is exactly what it sounds like, the ability to understand music.à These people are often musicians, and find understanding and hearing patterns in music easy, and find learning instruments easy as well.à They are ââ¬Ëgiftedââ¬â¢ in the field of learning music. Bodily/kinesthetic refers to being good at physical motion and coordination.à These people are good at sports, hand-eye coordination, and other physical pursuits.à They find motion easy, and may be basketball players, dancers, and gymnasts (or other athletes). Linguistic is the ability to understand languages.à These people often find it easy to learn and understand foreign languages.à They also enjoy reading, writing, and relating in written fashion. Naturalistic intelligence, which was added later, is about understanding nature.à People will be interested in nature, find it easy to understand the way plants and animals live and function, and are soothed by being in nature. All of these intelligences are equally important in Gardnerââ¬â¢s model.à Also, everyone has more than one of these intelligences and may, to some degree, have all of them.à Each person has two or three real strengths; some have more or less.à Some people are very strongly intelligent in only one area while others may have four or five that are all fairly strong. Knowing what a personââ¬â¢s strengths are will determine how they learn.à A person who is kinesthetic tends to be very hands-on, and to want to try things.à A person who is musical may learn by using songs or chants.à A person who is linguistic may want to read when learning.à It is important to know a personââ¬â¢s preference for learning so that whenever possible, classroom activities can be geared towards as many students as possible. After completing the inventory, I have discovered that I have intrapersonal strength, logical strength, interpersonal strength, and kinesthetic strength.à In these areas, I scored far higher than I did in other areas.à My scores were section 1-4, section 2=6 section 3=8 section 4=7 section 5=8 section 6=8 section 7=4 section 8=10 section 9=2.à This analysis sheds light on my strengths and weaknesses, and I can use this knowledge to learn in the ways that make sense to me.à This can also help teachers to understand their students.à Multiple intelligences are a good way to assess and understand students.
